Once again I heard on the radio that Archuletta stopped thru town today and had a couple things to say. He apparently does not seem to think that he is a backup, which is what I thought he was going to be at first. Apparently the plan is to have Mike Brown, if healthy, play free safety and Archuletta starting at strong...not a bad idea, as far as i can see. Brown went to the pro bowl a couple of years ago playing the free safety position (according to radio guy)...its basically his fortE. So if he IS healthy, which isnt all that sure of a thing (he still has about 5 months of healing time and will probably start the season on IR {radio guy}), we will have quite the powerful backfield duo.
Plus some solid rookie replacements in Daniel Manning and Chris in case of injury, who both have a good deal of experience and playing time under their belts now. The one thing that I am not sure of, is how good Archuletta really is. I was looking at Redskins site and their fans hate the guy. They think he sucks and that he can't cover a grandma in a walker. Now I'm not sure thats the case. I get the feeling that overall, the redskin defense has sucked for a couple years and they (the fans) have a bad taste left in their mouths from the Archuletta and company sandwhich. Archuletta, when translated into any other defense might not be so bad. I read that the hatred probably stems from the fact that the redskin D is weak on strong side and archuletta often had to cover close and thus would get beaten in the backfield for big yardage, making him look bad and stand out. In Bear D, he wont have to worry about that right?...we have real linebackers...if not the best in the league. So I think he will be a pretty good fit, at least temporarily. He hits hard like we like our Bears to...and he can stay back a bit letting the Linebackers cover middle range passes, staying back and being wary of the long blow by pass, and when the QB cant throw long he will throw short and Arch will have a running start straight forward and smash the guy head on, which will really fuck some people up, I hope.
Mike Brown playing free would be great because he knows the game so well. He can watch the offense set up, read the play, and go where he needs to go in order to make the play. A rookie in that spot is not necessarily the best thing. I think Brown will have a huge year if we set up our Defense this year in the way described on the radio. He will be everywhere, and as long as he doesnt get hurt...our defense could be the best it has ever been. Archuletta is like a Todd Johnson...he plays hard, and in the correct scheme, which i think the Bear D will be, it could be quite interesting. We could end up being a fairly feared Defense...certainly as good, if not better, than last years Bear D and possibly even 2 seasons ago's Bear Defense, although if we could beat those numbers, I dont see how we dont make it back to the superbowl with a more experienced Grossman (instead of Orton), a young RB in Benson, good receivers, and overall better offense. It depends on a lot of things of course.
Either way, we were not going to get an equivalent strong safety with our 6th pick right?...Arch has veteranship he brings to the team, hits hard, and will work well in our scheme from what I understand. The downside? - hes a temporary solution (hes not as young as a 6th rounder), hes a bit cocky, and he isnt as inexpensive as a rookie would be(which I don't think is a real problem for the Bears).
Seems like a decent trade to me...what do you guys think? Good? Bad?
