About Me

Chicago, IL, United States
I'm just your average opinionated Bears fan. Over the years, I've gradually earned a reputation with my friends for writing ridiculously long e-mails relating to anything "Chicago Sports." I've decided to spare them the hassle of automatically clicking the 'delete' button, and created this blog instead. Why limit the reach of my obnoxious blabbering? Why not let the entire public see the rantings of DLP? My hope is that I can inspire other opinionated Chicago fans to speak their minds freely. I know you're out there. THIS is your medium...

2006 Offseason - Walker Trade

I thought others might like a little boredom read...just a warning tho, as usual, it contains some serious rambling...

I am excited about Walker now...not that I wasnt before...but much more now. I was reading about the trade a little just very quickly and I definitely get a good feeling that we got some serious value for that pick...and at the perfect time too.

That was apt to be one of the only scary holes in the defense...and now I have no doubt that we will be way better than average at that position...especially with the strength we had already all around it. I think we might be able to kill some qbs this year...we may not even really get to see arch and brown work...I dont think teams will often break into the secondary unless they complete passes = liklihood not that great.

Think about how short a time the qb will have to get rid of the ball (tommie, walker, anderson). There are only a couple of receivers that will be able to burn the corners and safeties in that much time...and they will be doubled up on anyway. Lovie will force teams to try to run on us...I dont know which would be more ill advised. Our defense will score points if you throw (vasher interception on an offbalanced rushed throw), or you'll punt after 3 downs if you run cause we will stuff it up (like we should have MORE OFTEN last year).

I'm very excited to see this go down...

Meanwhile, on offense...man...its going to be crazy. I think that SOOOO many people are going to jump on this bandwagon when they see how good this offense is going to be. I KNOW we are going to score more points than we ever have in bears history and probably be one of the most talked about offenses of the season...screw the colts...dont think it will be the chargers this year....maybe the saints....but I think the surprise over the bears offense will be the main topic all the way thru the season (if we actually get any attention at all from media, favoritism much?).

I mean, think about it...the running game will be the same at the very least...even if it is not spectacular...we are the bears...we will get the yards. It may not be pretty, it may not be fast, it may not be in large chunks, but we will get it. I personally think that it WILL come in large chunks, but even if it doesnt, it has no effect on my opinion that the offense will kill coaches (heart attacks).

You add a short-middle passing game in Greg Olsen and Clark...in addition to everything else...you go to the superbowl...or at least have some really crazy games.

The key to the bears season this year is grossman right? well, i think the key to grossmans success is olsen. With Olsen catching short yardage passess (what haunted us last year? punting on 4th and 3), we will be first down kings....you want to talk about marching down the field. I gaurantee, it will happen...it will happen to the point that later in the season people will actually react with surprise to see maynard come in to punt. But all depends on what Olsen can come in and do.

Ok...so you have great "almost all the way" experience from last year's superbowl loss decreasing the qb mistakes by grossman (we hope and pray). You have olsen taking care of replenishing downs. What other negative things did grossman display last year? if he is hitting on all cylinders and is confident that he can pick up 7 yards on 3rd down if he has to, dont you think he is ten times more likely to step up and connect on a long ball to berrian on 2nd? i think so...dont you think that the run game will be ten times more successful with the threat of play action pass to olsen/hester/davis/benson? I dont know how, if you are a professional sports critic, you can think anything other than this offense being ridiculous. Granted, it is resting on the fact that everyone plays to the highest standard we have seen of them so far...but why wouldnt they...I cant think of one player that I would suspect got worse after last year...not even due to age...do you? Muhsin maybe? I think that that would be a bad inference to make...I think he has a lot more to give...and if ever he had inspiration to give it all, it would be this year....i think he will be fired up and on target every game. Olsen really opens up sideline catches too...and lovie will play to him...cause hes clutch, and he will be even moreso this year...more competition...the younger players will feed off moose, they will obtain all their fire from his effort...and theyll feed off eachother...think about how many of our receivers love to play that "nice catch, but check out this one" and kind of one up eachother in a good playful way, meanwhile keeping the sticks moving.

Hester will just be a total asset to opening up the other receivers. opposing defenses will instinctually lean toward hesters route and open up crazy breaks in the D that will go for long yardage to one of the other (and dont forget, more experienced) receivers. I wouldnt even see it as a bad thing if hester was rarely actually thrown to as long as hes in a play... running a route. As long as we take advantage of that 2 step advance in his direction, or the slight hesitation on the fake short pass to hester...oh man...berrians gone...td. So pumped. I cant wait, seriously.

The only thing that I think can come close to hindering us from playing at our full potential, is the coaching strategy and QB play. We need to get away from the conservativeness we are known for. With explosive players, you have to play to that sometimes. You need explosive play calling (unpredictability, fakes, draws, trickery) in order to take full advantage of the athletes that we have this year. I call it, 'football innovation'. It's not that I think conservatism will make us bad...no no, we need to hold onto a little of it...but they NEED to be willing to take some risks and run some, what i will call, "nifty" plays. I think the staff is "aware" that this will require a slight change. That is why I do not think it will be a problem. They are preparing for the strategy already.

I think Lovies natural conservatism will control the game, but his basic curiosity will force him to throw in the cool plays here and there. How can you not just wonder about the potential and just want to play around with it. Like when people discovered gunpowder or electricity...how could you not have the desire to play around with it, just to see what happens. It's not like if he takes some risks this year it will affect his contract with the bears, he has job security...why the hell wouldnt he develop more "jugular" type plays and simply tweak and maintain his conservative plays that are more just sort of an "advance" play...move forward, rather than an attack... an attack play, to me is, a play that seeks to destroy morale and put points on the board immediately...instant gratification type shit.

That is one part of this season I can foresee getting frustrated with...but I really think that Lovie and staff are on the right page this year...the same one as the fans...the "c'mon, what are you waiting for...let the bear out of the cage already...lets see what happens" type of attitude. I think they will feel a lot more comfortable with those kinds of risks. I think they have seen the benefits of crazy attack type plays (thank you hester) and really want to change the focus by throwing a whole new aspect into the game strategy...I wish to call it "balls offense"

Seriously...let the D take care of it if it doesnt work, you have to trust both sides of the ball and that, one will make up for the other at the very least...but more often than not, they will both gain from a little risky business...a little balls offense if i may....a little mushroom stamp your face type of eat my shit offense...a little 'why you crying little bitch, suck your thumb pussy boy' type of offense...a little 'I'm going to shove your own poop in your mouth and make you smile while you chew' type of offense....a little 'I'm going to make you laugh with joy as I tickle you with your moms favorite sex toy that she just took out of her ass' type of offense...you know...the humiliating kind of offense. tarred and feathered...you know? smash mouth.

Wow...that was a long one. I love when that happens. my fingers just start moving. that didnt even take up enough time...damn.
