YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!! SEXY REXY!!!
I know what your all thinking..."It's Grossman....DLP....It's grossman"
yeah...I know its grossman, and it isnt THAT big of deal....but I've always liked Grossman, and I wanted him to return next year. It may not make a lot of sense to some people, and I understand why it wouldnt...but for me, its a bitter sweet victory.
No...I dont think that he will have changed a great deal from his past performances.
No, I dont think he is the long term solution.
No, I dont think he provides the necessary improvements at that position that we will need to meet our end goal for next season.
So you may ask, "What exactly excites you about Grossman coming back?"
Well...its a long winded answer that I will attempt to keep brief for your purposes...plus I have a shitload of work to do....so I will type away....and see what length we end up...50 pages....or more like 100.
Let's start with the bad news. The re-signing of grossman tells me that our "fantastic" coaching staff over there at the Hall, have not been able to come up with a long term QB position solution that will be in effect next year, nor do they have even a tentative improvement for next season.
Yes, we could still draft, but again, how are we better off with a rookie in over grossman?...the same or worse mistakes will be made.
Yes, we could still trade for a vet (like say...McNabb). Again, I would argue that that is not a long term solution...and perhaps that is a whole other e-mail, but I'm not sure I would be a fan of that anyway...only based on what I would assume it would do to the organization long term.
Good news? Yes there is some good news.
My number one peice of good news from this, is that the signing of Grossman for 1 year tells me that there is quite a good chance that our other shit "G" QB (Griese-ball) is gone. Later geezer. I wont shed a tear.
The less crappy people we have around as a Bear that could potentially gain our fickle fan's favor for the "savior" of our team...the better.
Chicago fans are stupid and cannot be trusted. Having Griese-lightning around only keeps the QB controvesy around as well....and unfortunately our fans are stupid enough to believe that a controversy was in order.
Old man close to death vs young, and thus inexperienced, pimp of mankind. Yet, somehow Chicago fans wanted to watch an old man struggle...instead of a young one.
Sometimes I'm sad to be a chicago fan...we are a stupid city....or impatient/impulsive. Sorry to burst your collective bubbles, but there is no "savior" QB that we will have access to in the near future.
Grossman was it....and he hasnt panned out....at all. But he was our original "savior" for a reason....the reason is because he has talent.
If you want to argue with me about that, then fine...lets argue about it....but let me remind you that my first line of argument will go a little something like this,
"Grossman is 5'5", and he is a QB in the NFL (whether he should be or not)" I'm sorry, but for me, that fact alone proves that the frail little bastard must be able to throw.......I would call that talent. So please, I welcome any arguments to the legitimacy of Grossman's talent.
Is the talent shadowed by behaviors that remind me of a scared little child in the middle of a battlefield? Yes, but just because those behaviors exist, doesnt mean they will last forever. Did it seem to last forever at times last season? Yes, it poured shit buckets for sometimes what seemed to be an eternity.
Look, we all know what his problems are....the fact is that they are problems, and problems can be solved. Usually its just a matter of time...and guess what folks...we got plenty... because this upcoming season can probably be written off as a practice season as well, unless we make some serious moves or see serious improvements in other aspects of the game.
You may say, "Well, he has had plenty of time." True, but I would argue that the time that he has had has been times of distress...times with great expectations....times with a lot of pressure....and time that was spread out through multiple injuries.
This ample "time" that he has supposedly had, has been ridden with everything that can affect a QB negatively. And he has been forced to develop himself so oddly, and so quickly in different ways, that I believe that his development was fucked up...
...and I dont put the blame on any one thing....Rex for his injuries and inability to handle the circumstances....the media for be-littleing him non-stop....the coaches for not realizing what HOW his development was being impacted negatively by the all the things he was being forced to deal with...etc.,
So...he has problems...problems that have solutions....solutions that have not been realized. Whether its a coaching issue or an issue with Grossman's learning curve, neither are good issues to have, but one is much worse than the other.
Unfortunately, I am currently of the opinion that we have serious issues at the strategic and coaching level. I'd rather it be that Grossman is just a complete idiot and does not hold onto lessons or fails to execute them at game time. We are done with Grossman in one year. If it's coaching??.....uggghhhhh.
AND It's coaching....it isssssssssssss coaching people
These problems Grossman has....they have solutions.
What would not qualify as a problem with a solution: would be if Grossman had no talent.
That is a problem...and there is no solution. You either have talent or you dont.
You can't develop talent as a solution to the problem... of being talentless.
Grossman HAS talent, and for me, that automatically places him at a higher level than most QB's.
A talented QB with minor performance problems is much better than a talentless QB with less performance problems (ie. rising rookie vs. falling vet, Griese vs Grossman).
The fact is, that every QB is going to experience problems. The frequency of those problems is, at a certain point, random.
Yes, Grossman makes a lot more mistakes than the average QB, but given time, he should be able to continue to limit those.
The randomness that I refer to is like this. I dont very often drop a glass of water and spill all over the place... and I can pretty much say with certainty that I am very unlikely to ever drop a glass of water ever again. However, as we all know, no matter how great I am at not spilling all over the place, I couldnt possibly be surprised if it happened at some point....randomly.
What I am getting at is that, at a certain point, Grossman will be as good at NOT making those stupid mistakes as he ever will be capable of. At that point, it will only be the random occurrance of him just mis-firing on a play that detracts from his talent....a random occurrance just as likely to happen to Brady, or (for punning purposes only) Quinn.
That drop of moisture on the ball in just the right place that causes it to squirt out into the drooling mouths of the defense. That gust of air that seems to float the ball right into the arms the opposing team.
From my perspective, a certain number of bad beats and good beats can be expected in any game regardless of the QB. For that, we need to start making allowances...not beating Grossman over the head with em every chance we get.
Its like poker...no matter how good the player, the game forces him to take bad beats every now and again...it is a game afterall. If this didnt happen, there would be no such thing as the underdog. The better player, or team, would simply always win....no fun in that.
And so was created the following quote that I will coin, "the Grossman":
"To limit several potential problems is easier than dealing with the single problem of limited potential."
Ohhh yeeeeaaahh.
I'd like you all to put that in your pipe and smoke it...and then hang it in the classroom for inspirational purposes.
Wrap your heads around that mudum puckers.
Grossman....back in the saddle....
fullfilling his role of making me a stressed out hopeless wreck every game....every time...
gotta love it.
